You Can Help

The Foundation has much work to do, and as the old saying goes, “Many hands make work light”. To fulfill our mission we need the help of all who benefit from the service we received from 911 dispatchers, those who work within the 911 industry, and those with subject matter expertise. We need help in many forms including: 

  •  The heartfelt concern, ideas, and grass-roots support of citizens who benefit from 911 services regarding our Mission (e.g., disseminating educational material on 911 stress management and health, visiting your local 911 center to experience PSTs in action and express gratitude for their work).
  • Contributing Subject Matter Expertise:  by learning more About Us, you’ll see the variety of experts we’re gathering to achieve the mission. If you’d like to help, we’d love to have you!
  • Fundraising: while the Foundation is driven primarily by volunteer support, financial resources are greatly needed to: conduct, review, and provide scholarship incentives for research; produce and disseminate educational resources; cover expenses for advocacy efforts to assure 911 policy supports dispatcher health; provide aid for trauma therapy for dispatchers diagnosed with stress disorders when 911 insurance benefits and Employee Assistance Programs do not cover these services; and, provide for daily administrative leadership of the Foundation.

  1. Good to see that there is now a national effort to address 911 Dispatcher Stress. As a former 911 Dispatcher and for the last 11 years an instuctor teaching dispatchers, administrators and other 911 professionals about the subject of stress on the job, I would be happy to assist in getting the word out.       Terrence: thanks much for writing! We are optimistic about the broad support out there for our concerns and can see an increased focus on the topic of dispatcher stress at conferences too. Particularly, in my work at PSAPs and conferences, I am finding 911 leaders expressing real concern for learning more about how they can help their employees.     I work at a 911/police/fire/ems center in a town on the south shore of MA. We currently have a county CISM but I feel they do not relate to dispatcher needs. Is there someone or this group in the area? If not I would welcome the opportunity to begin dialog for it to be a reality here. Thank you for your time.

      Hi Gail: thanks much for this inquiry. My apologies for the delay in response. Been on vacation! First, your situation is quite common: that is, out of no intended malice, our other responders historically have not recognized that telecommunicators, while not on scene, still experience the worst cases as traumatic too. So most our police departments do not invite telecommunicators to CISM as a matter of course. 911 Wellness Foundation is working to provide knowledge about 911 traumatic exposure to our PSAP leaders who, once informed, are taking initiative to seek CISM participation for their 911 personnel.
